Are Workout Supplements Really Necessary?
Workout supplements are a large part of the bodybuilding lifestyle that's here to stay. For years, famous bodybuilders have promoted supplements, all while gym rats from all around the world consume them in hopes of looking like them; but, are they really necessary? The short answer is no – workout supplements are incredible tools, but they're not essential.
So, does this mean that I shouldn't take them? No, it doesn't. Supplements can play a huge role in enhancing someone's physique and performance, but they're only a piece of a very large puzzle. What most people don't seem to realize is that supplements are only the cherry on top in bodybuilding; if your training, diet, and rest don't align perfectly – supplements will only help you so much.
When Should I Take Supplements?
Generally speaking, people who are physically active, have no health conditions – and are over the age of eighteen, can take supplements. Rationally speaking though – supplements should only be taken by those who meet the previous requirements and that are well-educated on the subject. How many times have you heard someone say that workout supplements don't work? It most scenarios, those who criticize such products, typically don't know how to use them.
Think about it; why should someone that doesn't train or eat properly be able to magically gain muscle by taking a pill? It doesn't work like that and it never will. Supplements improve and enhance what you already have. If you're a workhorse in the gym, you eat well, and you get enough rest in a day – a sports supplement will take your progress to a newer and greater level.
What Are The Benefits?
Depending on the type of supplement, the benefits will be completely different. The supplement world is packed with tons of options for different wants and needs. In an article called “The Importance of Supplements” – I previously talked about the different types of supplements and the many benefits that they can have. A few of these benefits include:
- Muscle Building
- Strength Enhancement
- Fat Loss
- Reduced Recovery Times
- Enhanced Mood, Stamina, and Sex Drive
In short, there's a supplement out there for just about everything. Regardless of your goal, whether it's increasing your durance, improving your bench, or losing body fat – there's something out there for you; you just need to find it. Which Workout Supplements Should I Take?
Now we've gotten to the million-dollar question. Picking the right supplement can be pretty hard or very easy – depending on how you look at it. When choosing a supplement, you need to ask yourself what you want from it. Using a mass gainer while trying to lean down wouldn't make any sense; a fat burner would seem more appropriate.
If you still don't know what you need, give it some thought. Are you cutting and feel tired at the gym? Look into pre, intra, and post-workouts. Are you trying to build muscle but don't have time to eat because of work/school? Maybe a meal replacement supplement like whey protein is a good fit. Do you want to get a nasty pump at the gym? Creatine or a pump product could be what you're looking for.
I could go on all day with the examples, but – you see what I'm trying to get at, right? Give it some thought; figure out what your goals are and what you need to achieve them. Some people feel like a single supplement is not enough to reach their goal and choose to stack (combine) different supplements. If you feel like this applies to you, I've reviewed several popular supplement stacks that cover all the bases.
