The short answer is no – workout supplements are incredible tools, but they're not essential.

So, does this mean that I shouldn't take them? No, it doesn't. Supplements can play a huge role in enhancing someone's physique and performance, but they're only a piece of a very large puzzle. What most people don't seem to realize is that supplements are only the cherry on top in bodybuilding; if your training, diet, and rest don't align perfectly – supplements will only help you so much.

When Should I Take Supplements?

Generally speaking, people who are physically active, have no health conditions – and are over the age of eighteen, can take supplements. Rationally speaking though – supplements should only be taken by those who meet the previous requirements and that are well-educated on the subject. How many times have you heard someone say that workout supplements don't work? It most scenarios, those who criticize such products, typically don't know how to use them.

Think about it; why should someone that doesn't train or eat properly be able to magically gain muscle by taking a pill? It doesn't work like that and it never will. Supplements improve and enhance what you already have. If you're a workhorse in the gym, you eat well, and you get enough rest in a day – a sports supplement will take your progress to a newer and greater level.

Now we've gotten to the million-dollar question. Picking the right supplement can be pretty hard or very easy – depending on how you look at it. When choosing a supplement, you need to ask yourself what you want from it. Using a mass gainer while trying to lean down wouldn't make any sense; a fat burner would seem more appropriate.

If you still don't know what you need, give it some thought. Are you cutting and feel tired at the gym? Look into pre, intra, and post-workouts.
